94 YJ to 96 ZJ

I recently picked up a 96 ZJ 5.2 Limited with full time 4wd to replace a recently demised 94 YJ 2.5l.

The ZJ is not in fantastic shape, I am certain the tie rods are shot, Trac bar is toast on the bearing side, driver side CV, brakes, tranny is slipping and of course the NP249 is showing signs of Vicious coupler failure.

My question is what is compatible between the 94 YJ and the 96 ZJ, I've seen the XJ page and read a few odds and ends but have yet to find a solid page for ZJ interchangeable part.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately not much is compatible... The transfer case can be swapped if you change the input shaft on it. The 231 is popular to put in the zj. As for everything else it's all really a downgrade to replace

depending upon the build date of the transfer case, it's not compatible for an input swap either.
the steering is the same, front brakes, knuckles, short side axle shaft...not much of anything else.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

I know the tie rods on the v8 zj are beefier than the 6cyl ones I found this out when I started replacing parts on mine and realized the 6cyl parts didn't fit

Thanks for the help guys! Thankfully it looks like pulling the tie rods, brakes and a few odds and ends will be the only benefits before parting out the YJ.

Did confirm that the YJ has the same part numbers as the V8 ZJ on both brakes and tie rods. Not an upgrade but at least it will fix/replace the bad ones currently in place.

I'll have to look a bit more into the 231 conversion and the U-joint conversion to see if there is anything else worth keeping.

no, the yj doesn't have the same v8 tie rod. i've been burned by the parts stores having only the i6 tie rod listed as being for both models.

Same here, I learned from that mistake, kind of nice though at some point in my zj's life some one upgraded to the v8 parts
