94 JGC overhead console

You know when you press the us/m button and the step button at the same time it is supposed to reset it, well i was doing this a few times and found that if I press one sooner than the other and hold for about 10 seconds it comes up with a little thing that has a number (1-11) that has the word VAR under it, mine is usually on 8 but when you press the step button it changes the number, anyone have any idea what this is or what it does because I have no clue.

Thanks
