94 GC Shifting problem-starts in high gear

hey I have a 94 GC 4.0 I6 with 156,000 miles and for some reason when I am stopped and try to go, it starts out in a higher gear (most likely 2nd) and then kicks down into first ater a couple of seconds. Also it sometimes holds in 1st til i hit 3000-4000 RPMs but not all the time. Does anyone know what this might be?

Thanks in advance!

I had the tranny fluid replaced 2 months ago and it didnt help. How do you check the codes? could it be the solenoid?

I think the old key trick can read the codes. On my BIL's 95 GC his Overdrive Off light would come on, and turning the key to the run position and back off in succession would get the OD Off light to flash a code. (run, off, run, off, run, off, run) His transmission would keep dropping into "limp home mode" and would run in second or third all the time. He kept getting sensor error codes, but then they would go away and everything would work fine again. He ended up selling it off and forgetting about the problem.

Having the same issue in my 94 as well. Started 2 days ago. Fluid level is fine, changed it about 15,000 miles ago (last year with ATF+4). No codes thrown. Anyone else have any thoughts or similar issues?
