93 ZJ swap in 95 XJ axle shafts?

I have read a few threads but can't get the facts straight - I have a 93 ZJ with a broken CV joint and my buddy has a front D30 axle from a 95 XJ in good condition - can I directly swap out his ujoint axle shafts to my ZJ? I can get it for free so I figure why not - ok thanks guys

Yes, they'll work. It's not hard to pull the shafts and swap them...you can probably do the whole swap in under an hour, including removing the original half-shafts, removing the donor shafts, and then reinstalling the donor shafts.

Just make sure the donor has ABS, or your ABS will will stop working, and throw a code at the dash light.

ok cool, yeah I don't care about the ABS anyway - i'll just remove the bulb or fuse or whatever LOL, I know how to swap everything out as I just did a front u-joint on my '90 XJ Laredo a few days ago, just wanted to make sure there wasnt something I am missing with this swap, after this I am swapping in a cherry NP231 with only 67k on it - my buddy had gotten engine/trans/tcase out of a newer wrecked XJ and the 4.0 went in his XJ and the trans went in his moms XJ and the tcase is going in my ZJ

update: swapped em out and all is well - ABS light comes on at 10 MPH but I don't care about it - the only issue is I cant turn too sharply or the ujoints bind like crazy - oh well, NP231 will be swapped in soon - then it will be the way it should have come from factory

If they are binding that might be an indicator that the axle shaft is either too far in or too far out. Anyone, feel free to correct me or clarify?

Im interested in this as well.

I just bought my 95 ZJ and realized it has CV axle shafts looking closely at it tonight. With that......obviously standard axle shafts can be swapped.

From reading other posts doing a search....it seems that the bind comes from having a 249 tcase with a semi worn/worn viscous coupler.

Fortunately, I have a 242 tcase.

It can be done the binding is coming from two places. One the VC is most likely going bad. The second is that U-joints don't have the same operating angle. Mean that the CV joint can turn sharper without getting as much bind. If you have the 231 or 242 case all will be good.

Some ZJ's came with the U-Joint axles even with the 249. The binding is about the same, the theory of the operating angle and more binding is an urban legend. When the U-joints go bad it will act like it is binding up.

Well this thread seems like the best to take a stab at since my search skills aren't giving me what I want...

What hear XJ shafts have the larger ujoint that's considered an upgrade? I wanna swap them into my ZJ and ditch the CV ones once its lifted.
