i've read about changing the oil in the diff. i've never done anything to the tranny, radiator or anything. what kind of maintenance should i do to the tranny? i dont have 2 grand to sink into a tranny and any preventative maintenance i can do i will.

Well at this point it is kinda touch and go with performing "preventative maintenance" on the tranny. If you have not had the tranny touched before, doing a service on it now may just kill it. It all depends on who you talk to on what answer you get on this. But if it were me I would change the fluid and filter and hope for the best.

What kind of symptoms are you experiencing?

My personal feeling is better late than never. I just hit 87,000 on my 99 GC. I purchased the car off lease with 36,000 on it. I changed the tranny fluid and filter at around 70,000 and the differentials at around 65,000. If you have not done these two things, I would recommend doing it now. I'm about to change the transfer case fluid in the next few weeks. You also need to change the brake fluid along with coolant if you have not done so. I also need to replace the CV joints as the boots have split open and change the rear tranny seal along with the front t/c seal. You may want to also check these seals as they wear out over time.
