5.9L Intake Manifold Gasket/Seals

My appologies if this is a re-post, I did search.

I've been using oil in my '98 ZJ 5.9 for a little bit, dipstick is dry at oil change if I don't fill in between. I've also been struggling to prevent detonation/knocking/pinging - Chevron Supreme (91) isn't cutting it any more. I've been told the 5.9 engines have problems with leaky intake manifold gaskets/seals. Is this true?

A "Mopar" magazine that was sitting at the Dodge dealer (pops was getting the oil changed in his Hemi Ram) had an article regarding this issue in a '98 Dodge Ram with the Magnum 5.9L engine: burning oil, detonation, power loss, etc. - the Mopar techs stated that at around 120k miles the 5.9 tends to need the intake manifold gaskets and o-rings replaced. Oil seeps past the manifold, collects on the injectors, causing the above problems.

Anyone else having these issues? Is this the correct direction to head to address these issues?

Thanks in advance.

It's called the plenum pan gasket, and yes it's a common issue. Remove the air hat assembly, open the throttle body and look down it with a flash light. If you see oil pooling or an oily residue, the plenum gasket needs changed.

Do it right and get a new aluminum plenum plate from Hughes or APS Precision, with new bolts and a Fel Pro gasket.

Thank you - I'm trying to find the parts right now - and just saw a post on the DodgeForum on this same subject in a Ram 1500, I think by you

Thanks for the link - i had actually just read through that, came back to this tab and refreshed.....

Obviously this a much more common issue than I had thought, and had I known the correct name (plenum pan/gasket rather than intake manifold gasket), I probably would have saved us all some time, and frustration at newbs.

Hunter, since you're a mod, care to delete this thread?

My apologies again. F'in newbs!

I won't delete it. This thread will answer the next newb's question as well.

Let me know how the gasket swap works out for you.

Actually having some trouble sourcing the parts. Of course I haven't tried the standard avenues like Napa, but Summit doesn't seem to carry anything but Hughes tranny kits, and no FelPro gaskets. Supposed to have a man there to source parts they don't typically carry, but, of course, he won't get back to me.

Still searching. My other driver ('64 bug) is down with tranny issues so taking the Jeep apart might be on hold for a bit.
