5.9 swap, will this work?

Hello everyone! I found out the hard way that my jeep is not a submarine and now my 5.2 has a knock that is worsening.

I found a guy parting out a 2002 RAM 1500 and he has the 5.9 engine with wiring harness and ECU, trans, transfer case and some other parts.

Will this motor work? Do I need the 46RE? Will his ECU work, do I even need a different one? Will the TC work? Any info is appreciated as I know very little about this swap.

Any helpful links are appreciated. Thanks

all you need is the engine , your intake and sensors , and your PCM will work fine until you get it flashed for performance if needed . the PCM , trans , and t-case are of no use to you at all from the 02

The seller is including the wiring harness and ECU with the engine, are they useless to me? What else do I need for the swap? Would it be easier to just rebuild my 5.2

You could always get everything from the seller and then sell what you don't need. Maybe recoup some of your costs...

Here's the ad, he is asking $1000CAN obo for everything. How should I proceed?

Pulled from a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 with 140k on it. This is all I have, if it is not listed for sale, I dont have it for sale.
Engine is a 5.9 GAS V8 (NOT the diesel) $600 YOu get the harness as well as the ECU
Automatic transmission $600
Transfercase $100
Rear diff 3.9 ratio, missing calipers, $50

Also have:
-Radiator ($50)
-A/C condensor/fan assy ($50)
-Infiniti CD player ($50) and amp ($50)
-RF headlight ($50)
-Left rear Tail light, used, ok shape ($30)
-3rd brake light assy ($20)
-steering column/wheel (steering wheel not torn or worn out but is getting beat up just sitting there) $20

Make me an offer. I would be really happy to not have to separate the engine/tranny.

the ECU controls the trans , yours a 44RE , his a 46RE . the trans is no good to you , the starter is on the opposite side for starters . The length would require new driveshafts etc etc . The two engines are both OBDII but , to keep things in check with your PCM , run the 96 stuff . Some sensors will be the same , check part numbers for references . The T-case , AFIK , has a different speed sensor and another obstical I'll have to get back to you on , I asked about this before . I had a 5.2/46RE/HD242 sitting in my garage from a 2001

Just get the motor, then sell the ECU and harness and use your current one.

It's a nice find for sure , if you get it for $500 , even the $600 considering he's got to separate them , that's not bad for a low K 5.9 IMO
Myself , I would go for just the engine , no harness or ECU/PCM and offer 5 bills , go from there

Sounds like a good plan to me. I'm terrified of buying the motor and then finding out that I need a ton of other crap. Any thoughts on this? I thought I read somewhere that I needed more parts. Is my starter going to work? Am I understanding that the trans will not work? My trans is fine but who knows for how long after the 5.9 goes in.

You'll need to get a new flexplate at least. Your current starter should work. Your current trans will work as well.

Will the flex plate from the '02 Ram work or do I need to order one? If I need to order it do I order it for a '98 5.9 Grand?

I don't believe the flexplate from the (Dodge) 5.9 will work. Maybe five.nein will chime in with some additional information. He's done a few of these swaps and is a great resource.

Guessing the flexplate will work. Unless all Magnum V8s don't use the same crank flange, but I think they do. And pretty sure the torque converter bolt holes will line up.

five.nein how do you feel about the '02 46RE that is attached to the motor? I know I don't NEED it but will it work? Is it not the same tranny that is in a '98 5.9 Grand? I might be able to get it for a reasonable price since the guy would like to not have to separate the two.
