Not sure if they will fit - but as an FYI - the roof rails on a 5.9 are the same as the ones on a Dodge/Plymouth/Chysler MiniVan from the same year period. My parents had a 1996 Plymouth Voyager and it had the same roof racks as mine did. As for holes lining up - just use self taping screws and scilicon to seal up the old holes if they don't line up.

Awhile ago somebody had one on egay and said that it would fit any ZJ but you would have to drill different holes, dunno how accurate -

Matt, good news on a definite answer - sort of!.

I have a 93 ZJ with the roof rack removed out in the driveway. About 30 feet away from it I have my 5.9's complete roof rack sitting under the back porch. I'd be glad to grab the 5.9 rack and line it up on the 93 to let you know for sure.

Problem is, I have to leave for work now so I wouldn't be able to test fit it and get back to you til later this afternoon or early evening.

Off hand I'm pretty sure it would fit but nothing beats a test fit.
If you don't have a definite answer by later in the day, like from someone that's actually swapped them, shoot me a PM to remind me.

John

Actually it is!

Matt,
Just came back in from the back yard. OK, here goes...

I'd say it's an easy bolt on. There's a minor difference but it shouldn't be enough to matter.

I laid mine over the existing nut-serts but they have screws in them so I didn't actually bolt it down. It did sit flat enough to get a good idea of what's going on.
I took a chair around the Jeep and inspected the lineup of all the holes with a light.

Number and location of holes front to rear is the same on both and the rack holes are slightly slotted anyway.
Side to side, the distance between the left and right rows on the 93 measure at about 1/4 inch narrower than the 98 5.9 holes! May have to do with the sunroof being available on later years or something (sunroofs weren't available on the early ZJs were they?) or for all I know it could be a minor quality control issue.

So, from what I see that 1/4" difference is meaningless.
I flexed the rack around as much as possible (since it wasn't bolted down) and it appears you can easily get that 1/4 inch you need out of the normal play in the slider "blocks" and/or a slight flex of the crossbar.
Or, if you look at pic 770 below, a view of the inside of the 5.9 rack channel with a ruler over it, you could eliminate most of the difference by drilling the holes a size or two larger than they are. Pics aren't that great, the sun wasn't cooperating.

Hope that helps - John

Just to update this a little

the part numbers are

right side - 5FP78DX9
left side - 5FP81DX9

I had the dealer check to see if those part numbers were used on any other vehicles and he said those are exclusive to the 5.9 limited grand cherokees and that they are discontinued

so they are NOT the same rails as the Plymouth/dodge/chrysler minivans.. .they look similar but are not the same

Mopar released a fix for the rattling roof rack. Anyone tried it? It involves 4 clips, one to go in each "foot" to take up the slack. I bought a set, but I can't figure out how they go in, and the illustration in the TSB is of no help

On the subject of roof racks, how the heck do the cross supports come off? I have a parts jeep with a good rack and I was wanting to add the two extra cross braces to my driver. I may even use them for another mod if only I can get them off, I'm thinking the side rails need to come off first or at least one of them.

nope... there are two little caps that screw on to each end of the rails... take those off and slide the crossbar right off
