I just purchased a "budget" 5.9er, so you can learn from my experience. Paid $1400 for it with 225K miles on it. Near perfect body and interior. Things I knew were needed when I bought it:
Viscous Coupling needed to be replaced. I'd be amazed if you didn't have to. Kit with new VC, gaskets, etc was $350, did the work in my driveway. Do tight figure-8s in a parking lot to see if yours is bad.
AC compressor was locked up. Replacement from my FLAPS, and a recharge, all good to go. IIRC the compressor was about $250
Noisy rear end. Wound up being the most expensive repair. I had the entire rear end rebuilt, bearings, limited slip clutch pack, one axle shaft. Thread below.
headliner falling down - took it out myself, had a shop do the fabric, $80
rear brakes - haven't done yet, but they are thin.
alternator was intermittently failing. New alternator was $250, all good now.
$1400 original cost, plus about $2K of parts and work, so for $3400 I have a (so far) dependable 4WD beast of a Grand Cherokee.
95 Laredo 4.0, 2" RE BB, RC N2.0 Shocks, Custom Roof-Mount Light Bar w/ 6 lights, Bumpers deleted, Homemade sway bar discos, Michelin LTX 31x10.50s, and a Dog Box :)
Planned: Homemade Spare tire carrier, double shear front track bar, 4 adjustable rear control arms, New Rims and 33" Wrangler MT/Rs or BFG M/T KO's w/ LOTS of trimming.
Looks clean, I'd imagine no rust being a FL truck. I agree with the other guys, make sure it shifts good and drives straight. Headlight housings are cheap. I replaced mine, the corner and marker light housings all for around $70. Make sure all the electronics work, seats, sunroof, windows etc. Good luck
The emblems look off on the rear hatch, to me that means A. Been rear ended and put back together with no means of quality, or B. emblems were off and just put back on in the wrong place... The little things can bring attention to bad news later on...
no louvers means its probably been wrecked and they couldnt find the right hood for it. that would explain the far away pictures. either that, or its a 5.2 that they're trying to pass off as a 5.9. check the VIN. if it is a 5.2 that they're trying to make a 5.9, i bet they weren't smart enough to change the little sticker on the upper rad support that says "5.2 liter."
Reliability is relative
It's got niner rims, and that looks like niner style rockers.
I paid 2500 for my niner. It's a reasonable price if you have to have one.
