5.9 for $1500 or trade needs tranny work

Guy wants to trade his 5.9 for a 5.2 or 4.0 it needs a tranny. So my question. Where can i get a 46re or will a 44re work with it. If so i have a spare v8 tranny at a friends and will be doing this trade for sure. Anyone have any recommendations on this? Any info appreciated thanks

A well built 44re should work. But to trade a non functioning 5.9 for a functioning 5.2 is not smart. A 5.9 with a busted tranny isn't worth much.

There is a possibility that the gov. pressure sensor is bad causing the trans problems. That is a common failure with the 46 re. You are just going to have to drive it and see for yourself. No one can diagnose it over the internet.

Well i currently have a 4.0 and i used to have a 5.2 but unfortunately i crashed it. But how would i be able to tell if its the Governor pressure Sensor. Transmissions arent my strong suit as of yet but im trying to learn more on them. Would it be hard to fix if that were the case? And as i said.i do have a spare v8 transmission in good shape with a friend. So what would you recommend i do if i were to use the 44re?

Well if it was a gov pressure sensor and solenoid it would be an easy fix. Cost maybe 150 for the parts. If it has thrown any codes you can check with a code reader. Plugs in under the dash on the left side. Any auto parts store will let you use theirs when you roll up for free. Mine didn't toss me a code for about a month and I thought the trans was going out the whole time. Been fine since. If you can drop the trans pan o change the fluid you can make that repair. There are vids on you tube.

Another thing to look for is if it has a an aux trans cooler installed on the front passenger side. If there isn't one and it's got high miles the trans may be pooched. Check the fluid for a burned smell. How many miles is on it?

For the 44 re you need to build it strong with a shift kit. Look at speedfreaks.net. A lot of talk about that there. A stock 44 re will get spent behind a 5.9. Waste of time unless you make it stronger.

I would pass unless you are prepared to dump money into it. Just my opinion. I certainly would not trade a running ZJ for it.

Well there is a white 5.9 around me too with 196k for $1800 guy doesnt know what he has. Its got minor cosmetic stuff but otherwise strong still another platinum 5.9 at the local chrysler dealership with 175k for 3300 but its in absolute pristine condition in and out so im in debate of selling my current green monster for the white one because its only small stuff from what i saw that needed to be fixed. The headlight had a broken adjuster the bumpers were scratched up a bit but otherwise clean as a whistle. So really its all on if i can bring myself to part with my 4.slow lol its got sentimental value. Plus ive already put money into it with the upcountry springs and bb and shocks and brakes and brake lines and transmission i replaced on it brcause the PO did a tranny flush for the first time at 165k and didnt go with mopar fluid he used the amsoil stuff and i hear our trannys dont take well to addatives. Idk if i wanna take something that i already have somewhat to where i want it to.be for a while till i save for my 5.5 IRO LA and 33 km2s i already have a 8.8 and a hp30 lined up at a family friends place for when i really start lifting it. For now its just 31s im thinking i.could fit 33s with some trimming and all but i like to have some flex room. Is it worth it in the end for the 5.9 i had the 5.2 and dont get me wrong the power difference is substantial but idk if i need a 5.9 around here its mainly all flat land. I dont need the power of the 5.9 for what we have

If the body is rust free then I would pay $1,500 for it in a heartbeat.

I believe the car has always been a florida car but i need to talk with the owner further. It looks very clean from what i can see but i wont know till i see it in person. Looking forward to seeing it. I may trade my 4.0 to the owner if the transmission isnt completely shot. But if it is i will be building my 44re up for the swap

I would try this kit before swapping in a 44, which I'm not so sure will work with your computers.

Could be the throttle valve cable. A bad cable will send you chasing your tail trying to diagnose a tranny problem because it doesn't shift until very high rpms. I would take a chance on it @ 1500.00 if it were clean and in my area.
