Actually, you should get oil pressure when cranking the engine without starting her - it is an easier way (though not the soundest way mechanically) of priming the oil pump. I installed an oil pump on the old engine and primed it this way - she came up to pressure without starting, as did the new one (once I fixed the oil filter mounting plate).
