5.2 Crank/No Start
so since its begun to get cold... ol' Yeep has had a couple issues. my battery failed while driving... froze solid. got a new one... which froze a week later even w/ a battery blanket.
for the past 3 weeks... its been between -10 and -30. i got another new battery, and the jeep worked great. came out a week or so ago, started it, and it ran for a few seconds and died. refused to start again afterwords. it only honked the horn and flashed all the lights. i researched on www.nagca.com and found that it was prolly just the factory alarm. so i tried the whole unlocking the dors w/ the key to disarm the alarm... but still No-Go on the start-up. so i broke down, and disabled it as i read by cutting the purple wire w/ yellow tracer. tried to start it... no start... but @ least now the lights didnt flash and there was no horn. but im stumped. it sounds to me that i succeeded in disabling the alarm... but that its got another issue now. any ideas? cranks like a champ... but wont even stutter. acts like its either got no spark or now fuel.

I'm pretty certain that you don't diable the alarm by cutting wires. Chrysler/Jeep has a proceedure to disable the alarm if the vehicle is running, but not if the vehicle in not running to prevent it from being stolen (makes since anyway b/c it is security). You may need to pull the door panel off and see if the switch is still hooked up, what I've seen over the years is that the door/security switch will fall off and turning the key does nothing. Most of the time they can be reinstalled or if the tabs are broken you can still turn them with a pocket screwdriver doing the same thing as the key. Once you have verified this and are certain it is not the alarm (if your vehicle hasn't started by now) you will need to have codes read or theft verified at the dealer.
I'll post later tonight how to disable the alarm once you get it running so this doesn't happen again. |

there are a ton of write-ups about grounding this particular wire. everything claims that it disarms the alarm

the horn no-longer honks and the lights no-longer flash when i try to start it... so i think its disarmed. however... its still not starting

Only way to know for sure it is disarmed is use a diagnostic machine like the DRB II or DRB III and read the theft fuel state. Theft fuel on = disarmed, Theft fuel off = armed.
One more thing to check, would be the hood switch. Was the hood open when you tried to diable the alarm? Unplugging the hood switch disables it. You could try hooking the wire up that was disconnected and try the disable proceedure again while making sure the hood switch is disabled. Also a bad crank sensor will cause a no spark / no fuel condition. So, if your pretty certain the alarm is disabled you'll need to get some diagnostic work done. |

i just ran the codes as well. not sure what to make of them, being that ive never seen a list of what they mean.
i took the codes as a 12, and a 55. i could be wrong. flash, pause, two flashes, long pause, 5 flashes, pause 5 flashes ?? on my nissans and hondas, it was long pause = 10, short = 1. so 1 long and 2 short would be a 12. 5 long and 5 short would be 55. i dunno if these are the same though |

12 is for battery being disconnected within that last 50 starts. 55 just means that's the end of codes. So, you don't have any codes really to speak of.

Sounds like you read them correctly...12 is nothing or start of test and 55 is end of test.
With the diagnostic machine they can see if crank and/or cam sensors are present and also look for theft fuel. I hate to say it but you really need to take it to a shop or dealer, you could throw parts at it, but you may just be thowing your money away. Something else to keep in mind is the dealer may be slightly higher labor rate, but if it takes them half the time to find the problem the dealer may be cheaper than the mom and pop shop. |

lol... it seems to be a pattern w/ this truck. shes had a rough life... and always seems to need something. oh well... suppose i'll be biting the bullet and trying to take it somewhere.
what bothers me is the fact that it was fine. one day... it died going down the road. brought it home, fired up, but died. did that for a week... start... run for a few seconds... and die. for the past few days... its cranks... but no start at all... but the horn and lights would go off. after cutting the purple/yellow tracer wire and grounding it to the door... it cranks, and there is no-longer any attempt to fire. it doesnt stutter, it doesnt do anything but crank. lol... gotta love trail rigs... theres always some kind of mystery |

I'm not 100% certain on the 93 ZJ, but most Chrysler products have a 3 time start and die off before the security system locks you out. Newer Chrysler products may not even let you crank the vehicle, but again I can't say for sure on the older ones.

Once you get it running do the proceedure in this thread and you won't have to worry about theft again;

so how do i go about testing all of these other things that cause no spark/no fuel situations? i.e. cam position sensor, crank position sensor etc.
