4x4 Problems.

My 4x4 doesnt seem to be working correctly, it's supposed to be full time 4x4 but the Jeep burns out... Go figure. I checked and both drive shafts are on. When i pop in the 4Lo something in the front pop, not quite sure what it is yet. Anyone have any insight on what it could be?

It's really hard to say but it could be something wrong in your front diff. Broken gears for example. I would start by popping off the front diff cover and taking a look inside.

what do you mean "burns out"? like squeals the back tires? most of the power is sent to the rears in full time. with the 96-98 np249 (which im assuming you have since your profile says you have the 5.2), the front dont really engage until the VC senses the rear spinning. hold your foot on the brake and try to do a burnout, i bet it will squeek for a second then the fronts will grab and you will take off.

I do burnouts with my foot on the brake and it stays in place

With the transfer case in neutral try spinning the front drive shaft(wheels on the ground) If it spins something is wrong with the front axle...I would start with axle shafts, very easily could have broken a CV/U joint and never noticed.

you won't be able to spin the front shaft with the case in just neutral. it's still connected to the rear output through the viscous coupler. there is no true neutral.

i would wager he has a broken axle shaft/joint or bad spider gears or bad ring and pinion.

Be sure to report back your findings in this thread - it will be interesting to hear what your issue ended up being.

Ill get back to you guys, i just haven't been able to check yet.

Turned out to be the transfer case. Strange though, front tires in the air and when on full time 4x4 tires spin, when put on 4Lo tires lock and don't spin. What could be wrong with the TC?
