Search for "*242 to *249 *swap"

You can't have a wildcard in front of "to" because it is too short.

According to Kelly blue book your trade in value would drop by about 800 bucks atleast in my area by converting to a 2wd. add that to what its going to cost you to buy the parts adn the labor to do the swap its going to be way more than what a tc swap would be either to another 249 or the 242.

Every since they offered ZJ's in 2wd. They did the same thing on the XJ too. It mounts the same way. It even uses the same knuckles and spindles - the only difference is the lack of a pumpkin, axles and CV/U-joints (other than the obvious omission of the transfer case and front driveshaft).

There was a 242 on ebay for less than 200 bucks.

I wish I hadn't gotten a 2WD. If there was an easy way to convert to 4WD I'd do it. Hey, how about I just trade this guy undercariages...lol

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. Could not get straight advice locally and felt that the Dodge might be an alternative. Sounds like the 249 242 swap is the way to go. They are more plentiful... found several with only a few calls! We don't do any 4x4 and/or offroading and have little or no snow in our area. I am also not concerned about resale value since I don't plan on selling it. I am still curious about whether or not the Dodge truck transmission would be compatable. Does anyone know? Thanks again for giving me a workable alternative.

It's not really all that hard actually from what i've heard. All you have to change in is the axle, tc, and tranny. After talkin with Puma, I'm thinking about doing this to my jeep.

Oh yea, a 2wd jeep is WORTHLESS! Trust me.....

I'm actually surprised Jeep even makes 4x2 vehicles. They're a shame to the brand...

Didn't want the Dodge engine, just wondered if the tranny out of the Dodge with the same engine would work in the GC.

If you really wanted to do an asinine thing like convert to 2WD why don't you just remove the front driveshaft...
