42re shifting into second at 3.5k+

I have a 1995 grand larado with a 42re. I know it has issues but I am trying to pinpoint the issue without having to replace the whole thing. It gets to 3.5k to 4k before it shifts to second. Shifting to third or fourth it has no issues around 2~2.5k. When it shifts to second it jumps from 3.5~4k to 1.5k and that does not sound normal. Besides that it has a noticibale pump wine so I think the pump needs to be replaced. Other than that is there anything else that I may need to look at or adjust that may help this issue?Would band adjustments make a difference or anything else? Thanks! - Jeremy

Make sure the kickdown cable is adjusted properly.

Does the tranny fluid smell burnt?
Check tv cable adjustment.
Drop the pan and check the magnet for filings.
Check the band adjustment.
Check shift solenoid.
Check the pump.

I have done that, and I noticed changes on the other gears, but first to second still has the issue. Thanks! - Jeremy

Tranny fluid is not burnt, but will get foamy.
TV cable has been adjusted several times. (tried several positions)
I just changed the fluid and filter 8 months ago and the magnet was clean.
Adjusted the bands but now I am not so sure I did it correctly, would you get this issue with the back band wrong?
How do I check the shift solenoid?
I believe the pump has issues, but I assume I have to pull the tranny all the way off to service the pump.
Also replaced the rear seal 6 months ago as it was leaking a lot of fluid but that has now stopped, and replaced the radiator too as it had a hole in it.
Thanks! - Jeremy

My wife's 95 4.0 Orvis 42re was always finicky about shifting into 2nd sometimes you would have to let up on the pedal to get the shift, other times it would shift on it's own with a little slippage, other times it would be just fine, we babied the trans thinking it was going to give it up any day but it never did, 5 years later still going but somebody pulled out in front of my daughter and got T-boned, we settled with insurance and Orvis is now long gone.

That's what I do now, I just let off the gas slightly around 3k and it normally shifts. The only thing is I use it to tow a trailer around town, it's a 3k dumping trailer so its not light so I am hoping I am not trashing that tranny. - Jeremy
