4 hour trip without front driveshaft?

My front ds has been out about two weeks, with no problems. Mostly in town driving with some highway spurts. I know there are pros and cons, but my vc is shot. My main concern is any possible damage to other components and/or getting stranded on a long trip. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've drove to Cape Hatteras & other places without my front DS installed. I have the older version of the 249 too. When I get there I put the ds back on there & use it. When I head back to the house, I remove it again. It's about 1200 miles round trip & haven't had any issues on any of the trips. I've put about 25K miles on my ZJ running it like that.

its generally reccomended that you should not do it with your 93-95 249s b/c they will roll in park and having no shaft will burn up the VC. 96-98 you can pull it with no negative effects per general opinion

Thaknks for the input. I have my swap list,(242) and my inside connections at the local jy's are going to notify me when the right donor comes in. Meanwhile I need to get to Atlanta this weekend.

I bought mine without a front drive shaft. Was told the owner, my brothers girlfriend, had it in her garage. After the purchase she said it must have been stolen O_o... Too expensive for me to fix right now, but I put at least 3000 miles on it so far without a drive shaft. Runs fine, just have to remember to pull the E brake, cause it will roll.

That's for sure. If you have the older 249, it will roll on even a slight grade. I carry a wheel chock now.

I'm not sure about the viscous coupling wear, but I haven't had any problems. If there's nothing appliing torque or resistance to that front, how could it heat up.

I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about. Just saying I've yet to have any of the symptoms of a failing VC.

OP is fine. The people with 1993-1995 will have a trashed VC by the time they put the DS back in, they wont feel the symptoms without it in.

rlcii77, If you read the op you would see that I just took the ds out. The vc was toast already. I did the research on this issue, but was just looking for some reassurance. Thanks everyone, I will now take my trip with no worries about the ds being out. But will have my fingers crossed for everything else... After all, it is 14 year old jeep!
