The lower the gear ratio, the weaker the pinion gear gets. 4.88's on the 30 pinion is pushing it IMHO.

yea, arlo is right, if i recall correctly, 4:56's have 11 teeth on the pinion and the 4:88's have 9 teeth.
i cant imagine how much weaker 4:56's or 4:88's are than my 4:11's...... i stripped the gears smooth when i boke them in my D30LP.

4.56s I wouldn't hesitate to run, but like 5.9Andy said, the 4.88s only have 9 teeth on the pinion gear.....that's asking for trouble IMHO.

I run 4.88's in a LP 30 and have no problems yet. I'm running 35's. HP D30 are stronger.

The strength difference, if any, is not an issue.
Many people run 4.88s in D30s without any problems with the pinion gear.
If you do have a problem, it will be because of a bad install or a faulty gear set.

What size tires? If a 35" or 33", get 4.56. If larger then 35", I would probaly go with 4.88.

Well, the real ? & piont is. What are you going to run in the rear?
The sig says a 35. Are you staying with it or going to something bigger?
Personaly I would never run 4:56's & 33" or bigger in a 35. I know Hunters has been OK but most do not & those that have, have broken pretty quick.

I am goin to be running an Hp30 out of my old cherokee and an 8.8 rear. I will be going to a 36in tire at the biggest if that but for now im going to be runnin 34in ltbs. Ive been runnin them for quiet some time and i drive my jeep pretty had and still have the 35 in the rear and it hasnt failed me yet. My final axle set up will be an 8.8 rear and an Hp30 front with a 36in tire max if that. So from that im wondering which would be better 4.56 or 4.88 with no bigger than a 36in max and ill maybe never even go bigger than a 35in tire

If you haven't regeared and go to 4.56s from stock, you'll think you're in a prerunner

Just because the pinion gear has fewer teeth does not necessarily mean its weaker.
Tooth count is not the important factor. The tooth surface contact area, or the tooth overlap area, is the more important factor.
Sometimes a lower ratio gear set is stronger even though it will have fewer teeth.
