4.7 is porked.... what engines interchange

Well my problems keep growing.... gf's 01 4.7 grand started running rough and "shaking" as she said.... she parked it and now when I fire it up it clacks like a diesel so its looking like there is some serious stuff wrong with it.

It has been loosing coolant for awhile but the oil has stayed clean and I thought it was going out the heater core (its leaking)...

Can I use a engine from any 99-04 grand? Or will the HO not work? thanks

For the most part, you need to stick with '99-'01 because the tone wheel on the crankshaft is 16 teeth. '02-'04 generally has 32 teeth, however, you can find a newer one with only 16 teeth. Use car-part.com and search for different years, but make sure you look for 16 toothed tone wheel.

You may be able to add an HO, but since you can't use the HO computer you are stuck with running nothing but 93 octane.

umm he can't just use any 99-04 engine, it has to have the correct tone wheel for a direct swap.

Here is info I got from a salvage parts interchange index

GRAND CHEROKEE 1999-2000 8-287 (4.7L, VIN "N", 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel)

These truck engines will fit with the following changes -
DAKOTA 2000 4.7L (8-287, VIN "N", 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel)
DURANGO 2000 4.7L (8-287, VIN "N", 16 tooth crankshaft tone wheel)

Chrysler 8-287 (4.7L).
VIN "N".
235 H.P.
S.F.I.
Change electrical and induction / intakes systems as needed.
- interchange by switching oil pan.

gave in and took it to a garage....

Mechanic found a bad lifter which let the cam follower to fall out, so he says. Replaced them and now it runs good again.... Only 645 bucks.... barf

Between this, the leaking heater core and a bad ps pump all at 100k miles I'm thinking we're gonna dump the WJ, its really been a huge pain in the *** in the year that we have had it.

Did you get all new lifters (lash adjusters), or just one for each fallen rocker?
