4.0 ZJ idler pulley help.
my lower idler pulley is going out and i going to replace it , my question is it the top pulley interchangeable with the bottom one?
i grabbed a low mileage upper pulley when i was in the junk yard and id like to find out if its possible to switch them before i pull it apart. heres my belt routing ![]() thanks. ![]() 1993 ZJ 4.0

Weird that yours and mine went out the same week. Mine just blew apart yesterday morning. Not even a warning. I wish I knew the answer to your question but I don't.
AutoZone didn't ask me if it was the upper or lower. I was handed one and it matched what I took off so either they got lucky and gave me the correct one the first time or they are the same. |

mine hasn't failed yet but its howling really bad . if i hit it with a squirt of lithium grease its fine all day. im really tight on money so i hoping they can be switched out.

i just changed them out, they are exactly the same .

Not only are top and bottom the same, but they're the same on Cherokees and YJs and (at least some) Caravans too! I've replaced the bearings in my pulleys, but I used a Caravan pulley which looks absolutely identical.

I took a look at the U Pull today and as someone else stated above they are the same. And it does appear that they are on more than one Jeep/Dodge vehicle.
