4.0 vs 5.2 transmission interchange?

My 96 5.2L transmission is toast (why I got the Jeep for $500).

I just drove past my friends house and he has a 96-98 on his wrecker ready to go to the crusher with a 4.0L in it. It's a shame cause there are a LOT of good parts on it.

Are the transmissions different between the 5.2L and the 4.0L? This one has an NP242 transfer case in it too that I'm going to try and grab before he junks it along with the driveshafts for my NP249- NP242 conversion.

I need an answer quick before he scraps it!

Thanks in advance.

Different trannys. The 4.0l 93.5-98 got the 42re, the 5.2l 96-98 got the 44re. 93-95 5.2l got the 46rh I think. Don't put a 42 re on a 5.2l, they may have different bellhousings anyway. Definately get the 242 and check for any other "nice" things you could add to your jeep. grab the visor clips while your at it, if they are the same color. Mine are broken and its annoying.

Isn't red the only color a vehicle should be?
If at first you don't succeed, use more speed.

I just found a 46rh already pulled on Craigslist for $100. It'll save me from laying on my back at a Pull a Part and the aggravation.

Any problems swapping it out for my 44re?

Never mind. I just found out that it won't work.

Off to the U Pull It I go.......

Every place I am calling says 96 is a one year only trans.

Is this true?

$450 for a used tranny seems kinda steep to me.
