4.0 sometimes stalls...
Hey everyone i used the search but just thought i would ask specifically for a possible answer from you guys. Ok i have a 99 WJ. 4.0 150k. I have had it for 2 years and the first summer i had it i was at a stop light and it stalled while sitting there. Started right back up. It has done it maybe 5 or 6 times in the years since then and always starts right back up. It has done it to me twice in one day but this only happened once.
Now yesterday i go to drive it... i had not driven it in 2 days which is unusual... starts right up. Put it in reverse for a few feet and it stalls out like im driving a manual and just let the clutch out with absolutely no gas. so i try to start it again and it just cranks for a few seconds. I try again and after about 4 seconds it starts rough so i give it some gas and then it is idling fine. Im just scared now if it does it again i may not be able to start it. I also don't have the money to get it fixed right now but would like to know what is wrong. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks and sorry for the long and confusing post.

Most likely you are having a problem with the throttle position sensor or idle air control motor. Both of these are mounted on the throttle body. I would try taking off the throttle body and cleaning it, and also cleaning the IAC motor while you're at it. The TPS likely needs replacing, but you can test it to be sure if you have a voltmeter. Offhand I don't remember the procedure or voltage specs, but someone here can fill that in. It also wouldn't hurt to run some seafoam down the throttle body and through the gas tank, but ultimately your problem sounds like it is being caused by a worn TPS. Good luck.

have you tried throwing it in neutral before it stalls to see if its maybe a trans problem? mine did that when I first bought it cause the retarded torque converter was locking up prematurely at an idle.

Just an idea to narrow down the problem you have.
