4.0 Jeep shuts off while driving, sometimes backfires then shuts off. Help please!!

I have a major issue...my Jeep larado 4.0 shuts off while driving for about 30-45 minuets. It hesitates a bit then the engine shuts off. The lights stay on and the radio will stay playing, just the engine cuts off. It takes about 30minuets - and hour to actualy be able to turn the engine back on. It will crank but unless it gets some rest it won't turn over. I have replaced the ignition coil, distrubitor(whole thing-including casing), did a full tune-up, and replaced the radiator...! I am practically rebuilding this truck with nothing solving the actual problem...lol.

The gauge for the gas level (on the dash) goes crazy at random - when I have a full tank it can still drop to empty then go back to where it's supposed to be. This problem started when my truck first started hesitating (begining of the year) while in motion....now it cuts off.

It has been suggested to replace the fuel pump. I was told by a mechanic how to test it - when my truck shuts off spray some start up fluid into where the air filter hose attaches to the engine (opening the throttle manually) if it starts up right away it's the fuel pump. Is this test accurate? I did this test and it started right back up and made it all the way home. I have not driven the car for more than 10 minuets from home at a time.

I need to know if anyone else has had this issue or knows what the real issue is. By the way now that the weather is getting cold the time it can last before cutting of has increased (it shut of allot easier over the summer).

You need the codes that are causing the check engine light to illuminate. Auto Zone will check them for free. Get the codes and post back here.

Sounds like it could be a few things..may be a clogged fuel filter & or bad pump, Throttle positioning sensor, Cam or Crank Sensor.

I went to Advanced Auto parts and got help. The codes they gave me are: P0340, P0108, P0351, P0138, P0463, P1762. Do any of these sound like something that could cause the engine to shut off while driving?

P0340 (M)
Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
A rationality error has been detected for loss of camshaft position sensor (no fuel sync). WJ 1999 &' 2000: Check the camshaft target wheel (located on the right side camshaft sprocket) for damage or excessive runout. The runout is very critical for proper camshaft signal input to the JTEC. The lateral runout on the target wheel should not exceed 0.012 inch.

P0108 (M)
Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input
MAP sensor input above maximum acceptable voltage.

P0351 (M)
Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit
Peak primary circuit current not achieved with maximum dwell time.

P0463 (M)
Fuel Level Sending Unit Volts Too High
Fuel level sensor input above acceptable voltage.
P0463
Fuel Level Sending Unit Volts Too High
Circuit shorted to voltage between PCM and fuel gauge sending unit.

P1762 (M)
Governor Pressure Sensor Offset Volts Too Low or High
Sensor input greater or less than calibration for 3 consecutive Neutral/Park occurrences (4-speed auto. trans. only).
