4.0 GC cranks but will not start

My '94 GC started yesterday with no problems. When I put it in drive, the engine died and now will not start. It turns over good but doesn't try to start. Any thoughts on what to check, fuel delivery?, electrical? security system? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Check fule pressure by way of the large schraeder valve on teh fuel rail. Should be about 30 psi. If it gives you a good spray, check your spark. Could be a dead coil or dead fuel pump. Both are garage fixes.

Remove a plug and check if it is wet. Check your spark also. If you have neither spark or fuel, and you have fuel pressure, its probably your crank sensor.

I had it towed home and tried some basic tests (check fuses, relays). They checked ok. No pressure at schraeder valve on fuel rail. I performed a highly technical test of hitting the bottom of the gas tank while having someone try to start and it actually started. It will run as long as I hit the bottom of the tank but dies immediately when I stop. Is this conclusive proof that my fuel pump is gone or could it still be something else. Thanks.

Can you hear your fuel pump run when you turn on the key?

I do not hear the fuel pump at all when I turn on the key and nothing happens unless I hit the bottom of the tank. It spits and sputters but starts while hitting the tank but dies when not hitting it. Is there a more conclusive test I can perform to determine if the fuel pump is bad?

If you don't hear your fuel pump its not going to run, take it out and power it up and see if it runs/pumps. If it works its probably in the wiring somewhere.

You already proved to yourself and us that its the fuelpump.
Good Job.
