35C Drain Plug

Ok I am changing my diff fluids and I have some questions. I found the drain plug on my Dana 30 (front axle) and I took it out and the oil is draining right now. So while that was going I went to the back axle (dana 35c) to find that there was no drain plug just a rubber cap. Am I supposed to remove that as a drain plug or do I have to take the whole cover off? Also if the drain plug is so high how does all the fluid drain out? This is on a 04 wj.

That's not a drain plug, it's the fill plug (you fill it to the level of that hole).
You either need to drain it by removing the cover, or by using a hose/pump (~$5 at any parts store).
Refill using that same pump/hose.

o yeah its a fill plug, my bad
just remove it, then u must reseal it, using a gasket and some RTV
let it dry
then fill with fluid thru the fill hole

So you just fill it up until it starts to come out?

Yep.

Neither diff's have drain plugs. Pull the cover, inspect the fluid and magnet for metal shavings. Use some brake cleaner to clean out the inside and inspect the gears. If the gears look like my avatar, that is bad. Reseal with some RTV sealant (I prefer The Right Stuff sealant) and reinstall the cover (13-15ft/lbs on the bolts). Fill until it comes out of the cover.

If I spray brake cleaner in there do I have to clean it out or just leave it in there? Also do I need to put anything like threadlocker on the cover bolts?

It'll drain out for the most part, but it also evaporates very quickly. Use a clean rag to pull out the grunk at the bottom of the diff housing, then spray some (an entire can if you want) of brake cleaner in there and it'll drain out and pull some grunk with it. Give it a minute and it'll all be dry in there.

No need for thread lock.

Probably doesn't matter...not sure which ones you bought since I have only used The Right Stuff sealant and the black sealant that comes with a gear master install kit.
