33" tires-What Axle?

I have a few questions about the strain that 33s put on a stock axle.
When you go up to 33s do you have to get a 8.8 or a D44?
If you don't how long would a stock axle last and how careful do you have to be when driving?

I know you get the 8.8 from a ford exploder but where do you get the D44?

I ran 33's on my d35 but it wasn't locked. Never broke the rear but destroyed the front in mud. You can bolt in a D44a from a 96-98 V8 ZJ.

I really like the d44a, as polka said, a post 96 V8 zj will have d44a in the rear that will bolt in. If you find one with the factory tow package it will be limited slip.

A d44a will have 3.73 gears, if you have a 4.0 you will probably have 3.55 gears, if you're going to 33's you should probably regear anyway. Shouldn't need to be said but both axles must have the same gears.

8.8 is a reasonable option, but it really should be trussed, it wasn't really designed with off road in mind but once it's trussed it's plenty strong. (I'm gonna catch **** for that)

You might also look at the d60, which is a very good axle, came in old ford f250s and f350s if I remember correctly.

Just a note to clarify, (which you probably already know). the d44 and the d44a (aluminum housing, also sometimes called hd), are 2 different animals.
The d44a will be a direct bolt-in, (may have to change shafts, though), while the d44 will require some modification to fit.

A lot of people say HP30, you can also get a front d44 if you want to go extreme. I'd wheel it till you break it. Theres not a lot you can do to strengthen the stock d30.

So its doable for a while with no problems in the rear or should I not risk it because it is my DD?

If you were concerned enough about your front axle strength, you could check-out IRO. They have a front axle truss, and can provide inner axle sleeves, but if you're going to go that far, you may want to upgrade to a HP30 axle first.

d30 and d35 should be able to handle 33's for DD duty. It depends on how hard you are on them offroad and what type of wheeling you do. Some say put chromoly shafts in the d35 and keep the stock ones as spares then wheel it till you break it. The d30 should last for a while.

For my money if I couldn't afford the jeep being down I would go to the JY and get both axles out of a post 96 V8 and bolt them in, then you have the other d30 as a backup.

My old man wheels the **** out of his d44 on 33's. 8.8 's and 44's are comparable in strength excluding the pumpkin. Youll be okay with a 44 IMHO

I'm that guy that will give u crap lol. 8.8 doesn't need a truss it does not address the issue of The axle tubes spinning. Welding the tubes to the housing is the important part. You truss an axle to stop it from bending. Thats not an issue on the 8.8; the issue is the tubes spinning. The truss is just added strength, but does not address the 8.8 weakness. And a properly done 8.8 is stronger than a d44. Bigger ring gear and larger 31 spline shafts (d44 is 30 spline). If u r running an open diff and don't plan to lock it the stock 35 should be fine. Just carry spare shafts and go easy on the gas

What no way. I am putting a dually rear axle under mine front and rear so the tires are even. But it will be raked!

run the stockers until you break something. Don't go with the Mayan Calendar boys that tell you to swapout your axles because they "heard" it was a good idea.
