3/4 Ton Definition

Hi Alll

Here's a stupid question.... What does 3/4 mean?

I always thought it refers to the rated payload of a truck.
I assume it refers to how "beffy" (the technical term ) the suspension, springs, axles, chassis or frame, etc. are.

1/2 ton = 1000 lbs of stuff in the bed.
3/4 ton = 1500 lbs of stuff

I'm not sure if that included driver and passenger weights as well.

I believe it refers to payload only. Again, that's the "rated" weight, but they can take more.
