2wd 42re transmission swap

Is a 2wd 42re trans (1997 ZJ) the same thing as a 1996 4wd 42re except with a tailpiece? Can that be easily taken off and swapped with a 4wd open ended tailpiece that will bolt up to the transfer case?

This can be done. You will have to replace the the tailpiece and the output shaft. Replacing the output shaft on some trannies can be tricky so read up or ask a tech. I would also read up on gearing options for these transmissions as sometimes the gearing will be different between 4WD and 2WD. Hopefully someone else can help shed some light on the subject?

You need to swap the whole overdrive unit. 4wd and 2wd od housings are different.

Just swap trans/transfer case.

Then, when you want to, you can easily convert to 4wd.

Is the overdrive unit swapped out easily or do I have to go through the inside to change the output shaft??
