249 replacement. Been searching i just a have one question.

So my transfer case self destructed. (95 ZJ limited 5.2) instead of going through all the trouble to swap in a 231/242, would it be possible to just buy a 96+ 249 with lo-lock and bolt it in? I don't have funds to be buying different parts And cases from different year jeeps. Would I only have to replace my input shaft if it's a different length? I understand there's over a million threads on this already so instead of telling me to search and hammering me on it is prefer you not comment. I'm just looking for the absolute cheapest and fastest way to get this thing rolling WITHOUT putting in a 93-95 249. I'm not so mechanically inclined and I'm currently catching rides to work that's killing me on gas money. So any help would be appreciated

If he has the late gear cut why can't he swap his 1.55 input into a 96+ 249? The drive shafts should be fine

Edit: my bad I missed the "not mechanically inclined" part.

There is no way to tell what the condition of a used viscous coupler is, so it's not a good idea to swap in used 249's.

Best bet is to replace the viscous coupler in the case you have.

Probly best to let a shop swap in a reman and call it a day and have a Pepsi

Swapping a used 249 is gambling. There is no way to tell.

Easiest OR cheapest, pick one.

Easiest would be buying a prebuilt case, many places will sell you a 231 with whatever input shaft you want. You could also go for a reman 249 or a hybrid 247.

Cheapest would be biting the bullet and building your own case from JY parts, you can take a 96+ case and swap your input shaft in, replace the vc and call it a day. That would be a very good case. You could also run a second gen 249 WITHOUT the VC which would give you 2wd and 4lo.

Thanks. This is the route I'm leaning hard at. So to clarify, I need to find 96-98 grand Cherokee v8 at a jy, pull the 2G 249, swap in my 1.55" input shaft with the .840 that *should* be in there stock and it's good to go? Another thing. Is the length say .840, how much it sticks out past the complete tc, or is it the overall length of the whole input shaft. do you have to split the case open just to find out if it's the correct length? Hate to buy one and it be the wrong size lol. Other than that I appreciate the clarifications.

Just called a local jy he said he has a 242 in a 96-98 gc. This is not stock is it? He quoted $350 and it's almost walking distance to my house. If this will be compatible I'll slap that baby in. What do you guys think?

Its' stock. It's probably out of a 4.0 unless someone swapped in a V8. Price is a bit high I hope it comes with a good warranty. It should be closer to 150.

That's good to know. He'll be pulling it for me. I'm gonna shop around cause it's gonna be a week before I can get one so that should be time to find a good price. I couldn't find one for less than $200 online.

When you remove the front shaft it's rear wheel drive. Taking out the VC takes the front shaft out of play making it RWD but when you put it in 4lo it locks the front and rear drive shafts together.
