249 problem?

I was looking for a clunking noise and found it was a u joint but I noticed there is some play in my front output shaft yoke. Is this normal?

a little bit of play is normal yes. the transfer case is chain driven, and with however many miles on it, there will be some slop in it

Its not a spinning slop. Yyou can grab the yoke and push up and down. Like side to side play?

When I did carrier bearings in my last ZJ's 44A I had to get numbers off the old bearing and get measurements off the old pinion seal to match them up. I ended up going to an actual bearing shop (Miller Bearing) to get the right stuff. The parts store gave me bearings for the 35 the first time then when I went back with the old ones they couldn't match them up to anything (basically if the computer doesn't give them the answer they don't know). Sometimes you gotta go to the specialty stores to get the right product knowledge.

yeah thats definately a bearing problem if its up and down side to side play.

bearing should be a national part number 207 according to oreillys website
