My brother's 95' zj limited with 105,000 miles has a 249 transfer case that is on its last legs. He doesnt plan on keeping the jeep for more than a few years so he and my dad decide to just put a rebuilt 249 in rather than convet to a 242. They just wanted me to check about the compatability of 249 transfer cases. Are there any variations between them that would prevent a simple bolt on swap of 249 -> 249? Thanks.
i don't think there would be any prob. i'd stick with the same year t-case to be sure but if you are getting a used 249 how do you know how long the VC will last... if you want to keep the 249 just rebuild and be good for a long time
I think they felt that if its going to cost about as much to replace the vc as it would to get a rebuilt case then its probably worth it. Plus it is easier to switch the case than to break it down and change the vc.
i didn't realize that you were going with a rebuilt case... whoever you get it from should be able to know if it is the right one or not... but a rebuilt case is probably a lot of $ and chances are that all you need is a new VC... around (i have heard ) $400 and up depending on where you find it
