WOW back from the dead.
most 231s are the same, not much difference between them, just get one that is the closested year as yours. i got mine out of a 1992 dodge dakota.

Mine's a '93, and AFAIK, the donor came from a '93 ZJ. I bought it off an e-bay Jeep junk yard (which is no longer selling on e-bay). The yellow paint pen marking said "93 zj".

I have a line on this 1997 XJ 231 but I do not recognize the output shaft with the condom looking thing on it... My 249 is a cone with a hole in it I believe..

That tail shaft is same as yours just exposed shaft instead of covered shaft.. (At least thats what I think.. )
I had a simular issue when I did the swap for someone else but I think it worked out.. ( I honestly dont remember cause it was years ago..) But I think I would remember it better if it had been a problem... Measure total length of both cases thats you determining factor.. If they are both the same length you are golden...

It seems like my old 249 does not have the long exposed shaft, it is inside the tailpiece housing and the drive shaft goes into the housing. I think that this long output shaft would have to come off. Do I have to swap over the 249 input shaft then? Maybe it would be easier to find one with a shorter ouput shaft that does not have to be swapped out? Some pics of the 249 and some of the 231 with the long output shaft..

Is your driveshaft spline count the same as the new 242j?
From the looks of it the DS should dlide right in. From what I understand normally the problem is in the input shaft, between the tranny and the TC. I am doing the same swap but with a newer (2004) 242J, and it does not have the speedo hole, so I am waiting to resolve that part... |

I just swapped a 242 in my ZJ today out of a 94 XJ . I had to swap out the input shaft because my old 249 had the 1.750" exposed shaft. The 242 had the .850" exposed shaft. This way you are guaranteed a good seal at rear of the tranny if you have the longer input shaft. I also picked up the shift bezel from a ZJ that had a 242. What I did with great success was use all of the stock ZJ shift linkages. The 242 must have a short shift lever in order to function properly. The 249 shift lever will not work as it is to long. Surprisingly, it now shifts effortlessly and is very easy to distinguish between proper modes after a little adjusting.

man, it would be really great if there were a table somewhere of which years/models have 242's that are:
- directly compatible, bolt-in - bolt-in, but missing VSS-port - same rear-output; but wrong input-length - correct input spline/length, but wrong R-output etc...etc... It sounds like, as usual ....jeep used different parts even within the same year....but man, there's gotta be -some- kind of guide to which years/models.I'll be buying a rollover or blown-engine donor XJ to get my case (and an AX15 for future conversion to 5-speed and turbodiesel).....so I REALLY want to be sure of getting the right case.....can't afford to buy the wrong XJ three times in a row... ![]() ps; good thread! I've been copy/pasting the useful bits to a notes-file....good stuff! |
