I did a 249-231 swap, and got lucky. My input length matched, my output housing matched. I had to change nothing besides the tcase itself. Existing linkage and all worked out.
Seems like you'll just never know for sure till you have the tcases sitting side by side.

okay so here's what i've taken everyone's answers on three different forums to. the case will bolt up, but i will need to have the rear shaft shortened, can that be done. supposedly i can take it to a driveshaft guy, but i never knew that. anyone know if i can buy a different shaft?

Sure you can buy whatever length shaft you want. However getting you old one shortened is really not expensive at all. $50 is more than fair for something like that. (shortening)

Not everybody needs to go threw that though.. I dont know if it is the two different kinds of tail shafts and housing styles on the 242 or what..

well i was talking to Tom Woods and he was saying that on the late style 242 i would have to lengthen it. so i am assuming i'll either have to keep it the same or shorten the later 242.

just so i know, where should i measure from? and wouldn't it be a bad thing to drive around in "4wd" (really Front WD) without the rear shaft? won't it throw a check light or code or something?

The DS shop will probably want to know the length from u-joint to u-joint.

It would be bad to drive without your rear shaft. Not because of a check light, but because it's a slip in yoke at the tcase. You would loose some fluid without the shaft sealing against the rear output seal.

thats what i thought, about driving it like that...

but with the drive shaft measurement. would it be like from midlin of u-join to midline ot like where tailshaft ends to the u-joint or some cariation thereof?

That is dependent on the year of the t-case, the later ones had an external slip and no oil can leak with the shaft removed.

FYI if there is any doubt as to the input shaft, planetary gear cut etc. this swap can also be accomplished using the front half of your existing 249 and planetary mated with the back half and the internals of the donor 242. the only "mod" is to drill a 5/16 hole in the 249 front half for the rubber plug used to access the 242 low range fork lock pin. My "249/242" case has been in my ZJ for a year and a half and over 20K miles with zero problems.

hmm, thats an interesting option. do you have any pics? is it easy to change over the internals?

as far as the leaking question, my new t/c will prolly have an external slipyoke. no leakage, but no pressure from the rear drive shaft is there a chance of it slipping out? wow bad thought in my head on that, o boy that'd suck. then i'll have a leak!!
