With changing a spare tire being a 1 and say swapping out an engine being around an 8 id give it around a 4 or 5 maybe.
If your not rebuilding it its even easier. Its really just a matter of unbolting the old one and botling the new one back up. |

Like 99% of Jeep things, there is a step learning curve of tricks of the trade the first time. First time may take you 8 hours, second time may take you 30 minutes...

Quick Question What are the Shaft lengths? I am looking into this swap, and I own a 93' ZJ so which TC should I be looking for? and out of what vehicle?

I have a 94 zj with a v8. Was looking to swap a 96 242 from a I6 zj. The 96 does not have a trail shaft housing like the 94, just splines with a boot. Was wondering it the shaft is the same length or am I going to have drive shaft issues. I can probably get the drive shaft from the 96 if it will work being behind a I6. I would'nt think they would relocate the transfercase from a v8 to I6 but thought I would ask first. Thanks George.

I haven't done this swap yet but I think we are in the same boat. The 93-95 ZJs have a different gear cut and spline count for the input shaft than the newer Jeeps. You can swap the shafts but the gear cut will make for a very noisy transfer case.
Transfer cases from Jeeps earlier than 1995 should work but you may have to swap the input shafts to get the correct spline count. Apparently there are different rear driveshaft lengths as well depending on what you got the case from. Hopefully the experts can correct any incorrect information. |

There were two cases available. The 242, and the 249. 242 is 2wd/4wd/n/4lo where as the 249 is all wheel drive/n/4lo. The spline count is only different if you take out of a jeep from before 89 I believe. It was 21 splines for the Tcase input, but they changed it to a 23 spline input. |

reviving the thread here...i plan on doing the 249 to 242 swap. i am going to be getting a T/C that was from a 96-98 grand (most likely a 97) and will hopefully get full linkage for it (or buy new linkages). i was wondering about the output shafts. i've heard 8 million different things about them: change the planetary, cut the shaft, it'll bolt right in, etc, etc
. its starting to get on my nerves...hahai would like to know once and for all, with using a 242 from the same model year as my truck (97 ZJ with a 5.2) what exactly will i have to do??? |

It all depends on the donor tcase, what year it came from, what tranny it is off of, what phase of the moon was the vehicle built under, etc..
I did a 249-231 swap, and got lucky. My input length matched, my output housing matched. I had to change nothing besides the tcase itself. Existing linkage and all worked out. Seems like you'll just never know for sure till you have the tcases sitting side by side.
