Here's what you need:

1 52058784 Transmission Bracket
1 52058765 Cross Member
1 52058488 Transmission Mount
1 06504553 Bolt, Transmission support to Transmission Bracket
1 06033358 Bolt, Transmission Support
4 06101670 Bolt, Transmission support to cross member
That's funny, I do get an odd rumble at cruising speeds.

If I were to pick up the later parts at a junk yard from a newer donor truck, would they be a direct fit in place of my earlier setup?

Yes there is a lever, that is what the stock shifter linkage uses to shift through the gears. However, it is more of a "tab" that is short (about 2" long) it sucks for leverage and it is tough to shift the TC into each mode with no leverage. There is a 9/16 / 15mm nut holding the tab on, you can put a wrench on this nut to shift the TC manually. Gives you an actual grip, and enough leverage to get the job done. Note: once you are in 4LO (furthese position down) if you try to turn it more, this will loosen the nut. No big deal. Put it back in 2WD (furthest position up) and tighten down.

Novak conversions makes a nice adapter to make the shifter more solid.

Well, my VC finally broke and I swapped in a 23-spline 242 from a 91 XJ LTD. Everything went well except I think I made a mistake in assumptions. The 242 had a short input shaft on it and the ZJ's 249 had a long input shaft. I probably should have swapped them over but didn't and now have a leaking trans output seal or something.

Will the fact that a short input shaft was mated to the trans cause a leak from the output seal?

(I am grateful even my limited mechanical expertise allowed me to complete a swap like this, all thanks to the many people who have written about it with pictures!)

Ok im running into some problem with my 249 to 242 swap. I have a 97 limited with a shot VC. Went to the junk yard and picked me up a 242 out of a 97zj $400.

Removed the 249 and to my surprise they both have the same length for the input shaft. put the 242 case on the tranny and with my luck the shifter linkage would not work. Have any of u guys run into this problem? Im guessing that I have to get the linkage from the donor jeep. Haveing a hell o f a time takeing the VIC cover to swap the wires

The bar that connects the pivot point on the underside of the tranny tunnel to the linkage tab of the transfer case may be a different length. You can get it at the dealership for cheap.

My FSM says part number 5207 8116 is what you need.

Looking for a red wire its wont be one of the wires on the vic connector. Its behind the vic..

Not a very close up picture, but you can see the red connector back there. They may have changed the color in later years.

I had a similar problem after my swap, with the correct vic info showing wrong. but after a while I got a SERVICE 4WD SWITCH. Then a few days after that it started working correctly. so I think the switch may have been sticking from the time spent in the wrecking yard. you may have a similar problem.
There is just the two plugins. the ones that are pluged in. unplug them, plug in the others. they do not all get pluged in. its one(red) or the other(black).

Edit: I read you thread again; I dont think the lo is supossed to light up with the 242.

PUMAZJ,

Thats what my 242 looks like too. I was pretty curious as to why some of them have the different style tail housing.

The design in the pic looks like it woudl be better since you coudl pull your driveshaft without losing fluid.

It does however have a different seal for the output shaft, so if you go to napa and ask for the seal for a 242 they might give oyu the wrong one if you ahve that different style tail housing.
