Well, I plan to pull my boat and my pop-up trailer (not at the same time ) behind my ZJ in 2wd with the 231. I hope all is well and I don't fubar the D35.

How heavy is the boat / camper? Just dont tow more than the jeep is rated for and you will be fine. Tranny cooler is a must.

referring to the write up. did you have to change the input shaft seal on the new tcase? i just did this swap 3 weeks ago and all was well until i let the jeep sit fro 3 days this week and now there is trans fluid coming out of the weep hole. does this sound like a bad rear trans seal? or both transfercase and trans seal?

did you change the transfer case input shaft? That is the reason it needs to be changed because there is not enough shaft sticking out to have a good sealing surface.

Didn't have to they had the same input shaft leanght. The 242 came from a 94 4.0 zj with the same trans as mine.

Usually the input shafts are different lengths between the 4.0 242 and the 5.2 249. If it was the same lenght I am sure a lot of people will want to know what year you got the case from. Did you verify the lengths?

The T case would have no oil in the upper part of the case when parked. I would suspect the seal in the rear of the transmission. They will leak when parked hince why you always have oil draining all over when you pull the T case away from it.

249-242 help roll pin

hey guys I have a rebuilt 249 with new stuff and new vc. but I also have a np242 and I would like to use that but i'm very stuck with the roll pin in the 242 so i went out and bought a new vc cuass i can not for the king of gods get this damn roll pin out I spent 10 days trying to get this pin out i drilled holes hammerd it roll pin punch it and still no luck. I got the pin half out and now its stuck against the wall of the if the case. like i said i went out and bought a a new vc but not sure if its good on snow and rain. i'm not an off roader just a driver that likes all-time four wheel all the time. but I'm a litte bit worried about the vc burning out down the road my auto mechainc said it should last the rest of my cars life with matching tires. land rovers have AW4 and so do subaru and a lot of other cars have AW4 so what I'm wondering should i be okay with this new vc as long as I dont off road with it? like i said land rovers have AW4 and military hummers are AW4 so is a rebulit 249 with a mopar viscous coupler good? or will it burn out anyway? and if so how do i get the roll pin out?

The roll pin should be removed with a left-handed drill bit/easy out. It will take some time, frustration, and some *****ing, but it will come out. Took my dad and I BOTH 10 minutes to get mine out, when we did the 249>242 swap. Take your time, try to stay calm, and remember that small movements are your friend in this situation.

I just drilled mine out for the same reason. You can purchase another roll pin. I tried the easy out method, could not get it to work though.

231-242-249

ya i tryed to drill out the pin but i was to late because i punched it with a hole punch so now it stuck against the wall if the case and I'm not able to get to it or drill it out and i hammered it and drill holes in the case but no luck i spent 10 days doing stuff but no luck. so i ended up buying a viscous coupler mopar vc. cost me 323.00 the 242 cost 33.00 but I would like to put the 242 in even after i rebulit my 249 two months ago I gave up on the 242 and the damn roll pin. by the way does anybody no if the 231 has the same input gears as a np249 I have a v8 5.2 all i need is full-time 4wheel and two wheel drive n 4lo like the np231 and does the np231 have a roll pin or can you just pop out the input gear in the 231.

249 vs 231

okay i need a answer on how good the 249 is it has mixed thoughts from many people. I'm not a off roader just a street driver and like all-time 4wheel I like the handling of the np249. so i would like many answers to this this qustion. i work with master auto mechaincs and i was told the vc will last my cars life if i don't off road with it? I like the idea of putting in a np231 at some point but i need to no if there is diffrent input shafts? if i get a 231 i want to be able to drive it in all-time 4wheel if i wont and also would like to have it in 2 wheel drive if i wont I dont wont to be stuck in two all the time. so should i stick with a np249 or should i get a 231 down the road?

I do not think there is anything wrong with the 249 outside of the expense of replacing the VC. If the VC's were not so much I think we would see less 242/231 swaps. I did not mind the 249 until the VC went out at 150,000 miles. Seemed to perform well on ice, snow and off road. The only thing I can say I did not like about the 249 is that I like to fish tail some on gravel/dirt roads in turns and I can not do that with the 249. I will say I love the 242 for it's versatility since I installed it. I like it over the 231 because you still have the option of full time 4 which I use a lot in snowy weather and washboard roads. The 231 is horrible to use in snowy conditions for a few reasons. If you are a street driver I would try and install the 242 or keep the 249.

To drill out the drift pin I had to go down to Ace Hardware and get a 12" long 3/16 drill bit. Worked like a charm. While you are there you can pick up another drift pin.

From what I have read they usually go out between 75,000 and 150,000 miles. I am sure how they are driven has a lot to do to the life expectancy. Mine went out at almost 150,000 miles exactly.
