249-242 input shaft clarification

Hey y'all,

Im looking to swap a 242 into my niner for the 249 with a worn out VC. Question is (according to the sticky and all other info i can find) does a 96-98 zj 242 have the same .840 input shaft as my 249? And if so, i dont need to open them up and swap the inputs out?

Thanks,
Pags

doesnt a 96-98 242 use external slip yoke as opposed to internal in pre-96 242 and all the 249s?

Yes, I'll be converting to an external slip yoke, and that brings me to my next question. Other than shortening my d-shaft 1~2'', is there anything else i'll need to do? And, if possible, can i just get the D-shaft from the donor jeep and be done?

I ended up buying a rear shaft from a ZJ with 4.0 and a ESY 242 from ebay. This combination is pretty hard to find at junkyard.
Bought a front one from ebay too.

part number here if you need, I think it must be right.
