I just read that several times and I think I originally miss read it. Oh Well I Just Spent 3 Hours Pulling This Thing At Pull A Part So I Swapping It Whether It Fixes Anything Or Not. If that doesn't fix it then what should I be looking at? I know my motor mounts are shot. What would cause it to want feel like the brakes are on when I let off the gas at highway speeds?

In a previous posr he said he had put two new tires on. Like i said earlier. Might be different brand or taller than the old ones. No different than trying to run different Ring and pinions front and rear.

They are different brands and the new ones are a lot taller. So this may fix the problem accidentally by removing the viscous from the equation untili can afford two more tires?.

Itl fix it until you put it in 4wd it will do the same thing or worse with the 231. A 231 will actually make it worse in 4wd since its locked.

Ya but you should be alright street driving with the 231 since you dont run the 231 in 4wheel on the street. I would get two matching tires when you can afford it though anyway.

Did you finish the swap yet?

Almost got my 249 dropped and the other one in when i encountered this problem.
231 Shift Indicator Sensor

The NP249 sensor WILL NOT work in the 231, as the threaded portion is about 3 times longer. I attempted to shim it to no avail. XJ cases do not have the proper provision to have a fully functional VIC, however you can use the 4wd switch on the XJ to show "part time" when in 4wd.

Should i use the plug from the xj harness and just solder it onto my wiring harness? Does anyone have a picture of this shift tab? I have to go back tomorrow to take my core back and i want to make sure i grab the right thing.

@98GCLimited,

It took me 3 hours to pull the one in the JY. It had a factory Transfer Case skid and all 3 bolts holding it to the unibody and the cross member were free spinning. My transfer case removal, and installation of the 231 took me all of 1-1.5 hours. It was pretty quick. I still am lacking the transmission mount, cross member and both drive shafts. Which i estimate to take another .5-1 hour depending on how hard the transmission mount fights me going back in this time.

Which im assuming is located on the VIC that has been covered by stickers since 09.

I cant wait to get this thing done, going back to pull a part in the AM to get my core charge back and pick up a few nick nack things and the XJ linkage i left on the ground. Im still not sure what theyre referring to when they mention the shift tab. I even did the Google.

Both those pics are the shift tab. I used the one from the 249 on my 231.

On my 96 one of those nutserts for the crossmember bolt stripped. You'll have to figure out if the nutsert is loose or stripped. Tap it and use a bigger bolt if stripped. Cut a hole and weld it back down if its loose.

Just FYI, a vc doesn't suddenly fail. It slowly goes bad and gets worse over time which will beat up your front suspension, drive shaft, tires, and diff.

just reading this now, but the problem with your 249 was the taller tires. you destroyed that transfer case.

did you get the 231 swap done?

running the bigger tires on the AWD wrecked it good. your symptoms described are all driveline binding due to different tiresizes....................

Yes I got it done and it's running amazing now. It rides so smooth. I'm falling in love with my Zj again. The only problem with it is I think my shift tab on the case came loose and I will have to get back under it and tighten it. I tried putting it in 4wd today and it was just a smooth pull back. I'm hoping that's all that happened and it isn't something internal in the case.
