Yikes, that's a nasty failure. Probably a combination of a poor factory heat-treat and fatigue - definitely not a common failure. NP249 output shaft won't work in an NP242, if you were already having chain issues it's probably time to hunt down a replacement transfer case.

This is where it all started..
I have replaced the case and rear end. Just waiting till friday to get a shortened driveshaft
