242 TC Overhaul or not...

Hey all, this is my first post, but I hope this is not a stupid question. I wanted to get a consensus before I purchase an overhaul kit.

The situation is, I pulled a 242 TC out of a 1993 JGC and when I pulled it, it was caked with dirt and looks like oil. I am not able to determine if the oil came from the TC or not. In any case, should I replace seals, o rings and gaskets or should I do that and include the bearings. I am already thinking about doing the rear transmission seal since I will be there. What else can I do since I am going to be there.

thanks,

Mark

If it were me? I'd clean it up, stick it in and see what happens. No big deal to snatch it back out if you determine it needs help.

Good point. I have to re-RTV the case anyway since we didn't know how to take out the TC. Can someone tell me where I can get fill and drain plugs other than the dealer. The ones that are on the TC are kinda chewed up. Not sure why, but I do have wrenches now that will work.

i would start by tearing down the case and buying parts individually, when i bought my t-case i almost bought a complete rebuild kit which was $150, held out, opened up the t-case and replaced the parts that were worn out and spent around $75. i got everything from these guys.

Thank you.

Question. Did you have to replace the input shaft bearing? If so, how did you determine what size it was, ie 24mm or 16mm?

Another question. Since I pulled this TC out of a 1993 JGC Laredo, will I need to swap the Input shaft like I see everyone else doing on their swaps? It seems that if they pulled their 242 out of an XJ I can seen the Input shaft needing to be swapped out.

Am I thinking right by not having to swap out the input shaft out of this TC since it came out of a JGCL?

will you have to swap the input shaft? who knows, probably. mid 94 was the gear pitch change, your input shaft may not be able to swap over. you may have to do the whole front half of the case.

How will I know? Sorry for the dumb question, but I am a total NOOB when it comes to this. When you say "gear pitch change" what does that mean? Is there something I can look at to determine this?

also when cleaning up the TC, is there a particular cleaner I need to use?

thanks,

Mark

since you have a 94 theres no telling what your gear pitch is, defanetley swap over the front half of the case because you never know.

read this

as for the input bearing, everything newer than 95 had the thick bearing, anything older than that is a crap shoot.
