242 Shift Bezel

Well, I picked up a 242 today, but they didn't have the shifter bezel for it. So I guess I'll be canvasing other junkyards for one - my question is will a Selec-Trac bezel from any ZJ work, or only 96-98? Edit: While I'm at it, what about ones from XJs?

I know they redesigned the dash, just don't know about the center console

I just found a "Interior Pic" thread in the XJ section, that looks like a no.

I have one XJ for parts with a 231 and one running with a 242, and the bezels are different, nevertheless, I believe the little plastic plate could be taken out and replaced in the 249 bezel.
I will take the parts one out and see if I can fit it in my 249 TC and let you guys know.
I had been looking at doing that anyway.

OK, just got back from the junkyard, and 93-95's will NOT fit 96-98's. I did manage to find the one 96+ 242 bezel they had out of the 10 ZJs...

Good luck. There's a couple vendors on here that sell new and/or refurb. cases, but at at least triple the cost of a junkyard one. The bezel you might be able to get from said vendors, or from the dealer.

I had been looking at doing that anyway.
I was looking into this too I was working of the 94 model though..
Yea the plastic identification thingie isn't the same from the XJ's.
I did a little hacking to the two I had.. the original 249 from my 94 and a donor 242 from an XJ.. I dont know off hand what year the Xj was but it was early 90's like 91 or 92...
So disassembled both of them and I got the XJ one down to just the black plastic lens.. Its shorter in length than the ZJ's plastic, but it is verry close to the same width... But what i did was to cut the Xj' plastic so it was flat and square on both ends.. then tape that to the ZJ's plastic.. then marked where I was going to cut the ZJ's plate... once cut I wound up with 3 pieces... one from the XJ, in the middle.. and two small pieces from the ZJ top and bottom so it fit nicely into the ZJ's bezel.

The Zj's bezel has two layers in the light up part.. one clear and one black with the lettering on it.. I then double sided scotch taped the 3 black pieces to the clear lense to be sure of the fit and finish.. It seems to look good. The issue I'm having is that the light is too bright for the XJ lense portion, I need to either find a smaller wattage bulb, and where I have cut the old pieced light is flowing threw. I need to find the best way to color them black to kill the light. Those two issued need to be resolved before I final glue the pieced together..

It looks nice in the daylight right now though.. The lettering on the bezel doesn't exactly line up with the shift lever.. but it shows the order.. The other thing is that the lettering on the old XJ bezel isnt exactly in the same lettering style and "refinement" of the ZJ.. but oh well.

Before anybody asks... I'm heading out now to take a few picks for you guys..

Looks good. Two suggestions, not sure if you can do this or not. Move the light back towards the middle and put something on the bottom of it so that you cannot see where the pieces are different.
