242 driveshaft swap question

To start yes I read the thread stickyed and it was extremely helpful but I have a few questions still.....

I got an NP 242 out of a 97v8 zj. It has the external slip yolk (exposed splines) and my current 249 has the internal slip yolk. According to some people I spoke to they said I don't need to modify anything but just by measuring on my own truck and according to the thread it seems I need to shorten my Driveshaft about 1.5".

Now the next question, instead of shortening my DS could I get away with tossing a lift on the truck instead (since a longer DS is usually needed). I was planing on doing a 3 inch lift soon but if it will let me run the longer DS I will just lift it now. Also on the flip side, if I do shorten it will it work if I do decide to lift it? Or do I have to shorten it regardless?

Final question, I have no front drive shaft (PO lost it because he removed it due to bad VIS) Should I get a stock 5.9 front shaft (CV style) or is there a better option and if so what is it and what else is needed to make it work(such as mounting). Thanks for the help guys......

1998 TJ Sport 5 Speed 31x10.5s, completely murdered out, and a short throw haha (miss that jeep)
1999 TJ SE 5 Speed (ls swap that became a part-out due to excess frame rot)

Hi!

Yes, you need a shorter rear driveshaft for external slip yoke 242 ($50-70 off Ebay shipped). I'm not too sure about the lift, I think it has to be way more than 3'' to make up the 1.5'' shaft difference.

For a CV-style front shaft, you'd need a CV-style yoke too, and you'd have to swap it in. What's your front yoke at present, u-joint or CV style?
Anyhow, as far as I know you don't need a different front driveshaft if just swapping 242 with 249, just go stock for your model (is it TJ or ZJ)?

If, you don't lift it you will have to shorten your DS.

If you do lift it, you may not need to shorten your DS. I'm not sure of the magic number, but 3" sounds about right.

If your going to wheel it, get rid of the CV style DS,

Yeah I know the CV is junk, what do I need to change tho just the yolk on the front dif right? Where would I get a correct length front DS that is not a CV style? I am going to have to wait and see what more people say about the rear tho, if lifting it fixes it then thats what I am doing......

So, mine can stock with the ujoint DS, I've seen several in the JY, I'd try that first. Of course you will need the yoke too.

I did the 249-242 swap and didnt shorten the drive shaft. This was 3 + months ago and i have yet to notice any side effects.
