the 242 will probably be more of a bolt in TC then the 231 and is pretty strong while giving you the full range of options.. the 231 can fit with little to no modification depending on years.. the 231 has alot of after market support.. stronger cases, bigger/thicker chains, better shift forks.

if you want the option of fulltime 4wd then go with the 242, if you think you'd want to upgrade the case a little then go with the 231 which still gives you the 2wd option with 4part time and 4lo

I went with the 231. It's rated stronger, and is 'simpler' (less to go wrong).
I got lucky with mine, and it was a direct swap, linkage and all.

I'd go with the 242. I had a 231 in my wrangler and a 242 in each of my Cherokees. I really like having the full time option. As for the strength, both are great transfer cases.

Its a trick question. If you need a fulltime mode go with the 242 otherwise go with the 231.

I had a 231 but it would not stay in 4wd, it was replaced with a 242 and i think ive needed fulltime mabye once.

Fulltime is more of a novelty for this area.

Yup... As for us in the north who have snow and ice, full-time is perfect for days with patches of snow or patches of ice.

as long as you use a 95 or older case you can swap the input shafts if needed.
