Was the 231j TC ever used on Grands?

I am starting to round up other parts I might need for the 231j swap, and have not seen it in ZJ's, only on XJ's.
I do have the XJ bezel, but I'd like to find one from a ZJ if it was available.
Thks..

231s are rare in zjs and were really mostly used in xjs tjs and yjs i believe. The bezel is the shifter assembly you see that reads 2wd 4 hi and 4lo for the 231 and the same plus full time 4wd for the 242

I just picked up a 1995 GC Laredo that has the 231J. Is this a desirable transfer case? My tranny man (I'm having to rebuild the tranny, too) has a friend who said he can rebuild it for $450. Should I rebuild it or try to find another?

Thanks,
Scott

The 231 or 242 both give you a 2 wheel drive option, and part time 4 wheel drive. The 242 also gives you a full time 4 wheel drive, which is not really needed much, unless you see a lot of rain or snow.
Both are good, and many people prefer them over the 249 which is only full or part time 4wd and no 2wd option.

I've got the 242 in my 96 ZJ. It's new to me and a little confusing. I have 4 hi part time (lights up rear wheels on console), 4 hi full time (lights up 4 wheels on console), and 4 low part time (lights up 2 wheels on console) This says to me that low range is "part time" ie, I'm in rear wheel drive until the front wheels need to drive. Is that correct? If so, I think it misses the point of 4-low. By the time the front wheels engage, I'm already stuck.

Does the 231 bolt right up to the 42re? Without drive shaft modification?

4HI Full Time can be used any time (i.e. FULL time...), even on dry roads. The front and rear driveshafts are not locked together.

4HI Part Time should only be used on slippery roads or dirt roads. The front and rear driveshafts are locked and always spinning at the same speed.

4LO should only be used on slippery roads or dirt roads, when you need gear reduction to "crawl" or you need more power. The front and rear driveshafts are locked and always spinning at the same speed.

Hope that helps.

It's counter-intuitive, that's for sure.

Not so counter-intuitive: you can run full-time in "4 High Full-time"
You can only run part of the time in "part-time"
