231 swap---VIC & Driveshaft questions - 93 ZJ
First of all i tried searching and didnt quite get what im lookin for
im going to be swapping a 231 into my ZJ to replace my grinding/messed up 249
i can get a 231 out of a 97-90 wrangler that has 23 spline and 1.550" input length, 1.750" speed hole, so it will be a direct bolt on to my ZJ...drop out the 249.. put in the 231. so thats not a problem
the only thing im still not sure about is how to get the 231 to work right with the VIC.
those of you who have done the 231 swap... what do i have to do to make my VIC work correctly with the 231. i know there is a simple way to do it since the ZJ's had the 231 as an option.
another question i have is driveshafts... will i need a any new driveshafts when i switch to the 231?

I did not need to change driveshafts on mine, but i gotta 4.0, and the donor was out of a ZJ.
And for the VIC, remove it, and look at the harness behind it. There is a red or black wire plugged in now, and the other is loose. Disconnect the one that's hooked up, connect the other.

oh i thought that plug was only for the 242... i didnt realize that for a 231 you also just have to switch the plugs behind the VIC

ok i think i found a 231 that will work... the only thing im concerned about is the speedo
its a NP231 from a 98 XJ for $150
im going to go look at it probably on Saturday to make sure the spline count and input length match up... and to check the speedo hole...
the website ive been using ( http://www.lightruck.com/transfercas...#GRANDCHEROKEE ) doesnt say anything about the speedo hole on the 98 XJ NP231
hopefully i wont have to modify my shafts

The one out of the XJ is gonna should have the right spline count, being a 98, but it is probably also gonna have a different (longer) tail housing, with a vaccuum switch that operates the XJs axle disconnect (potential DS length issue). The speedo hole shouldn't be an prob, they all used the same sender unit.
If you do get that one, there is no hope of changing input shafts. The planetary gear pitch changed in 94 or 96, input shafts are not compatible.
I agree that your best bet is to find one from another ZJ.

Since they didn't make a V8 231 ZJ, a direct swap is gonna be hard to find.
I think your best bet is a 4.0 ZJ 231 from 93/94 that you can swap your 249 input shaft into...

a direct swap will be simple to find
just need to find one from an 87-90 wrangler with 23 spline count and then put a new front output yoke on it
