2000 WJ with 247 making a popping in low traction

Hi all, just started to notice this with all the snow we've had here lately. when I'm taking off from a stop in snow or ice (low traction areas). I get a popping noise that sounds like it comes from the front right, and once or twice when the front left only was on ice it sounded like it came from the front left, generally just the right though, until the back end gains traction. Once it pops a few times (or more depending on throttle pressure) it drives like normal, no issues. Any ideas are appreciated.

I haven't had the time this weekend to go buy and install a new cv half shaft. I plan on trying to accomplish this next weekend. If it fixes the problem or does not I'll make sure and post my results. It makes sense that the CV joint would begin failing when under stress though, such as having the power applied to that wheel.

When mine started doing that with 115k on it, it was the transfer case. The chain inside had stretched to the point where it was skipping on the teeth. I took that oppertunity to swap to the 242hd for $400.(I already had replaced the front DS with a u-joint style) Funny enough I bought that case in MO, about 7 miles from the KS border.(Joplin)

I have the same symptoms as you both but I JUST this friday replaced the transfer case and it is doing the same thing, popping in the front.

My mechanic says that if it was in the diff, you would hear it.

ALSO check your CV front drive shaft!!!! Remove it and test drive.

I bet its the DS. Depending on whats failing in the joint, you can get popping sounds at all different kinds of circumstances.

marioct, if you think it could be the t-case or the front axle, and its neither, then its probably the front drive shaft!
