2000 Grand Cherokee Leaking Coolant

My Jeep is leaking coolant and I am in need of suggestions as to why it is leaking and how to fix it myself, I have fixed leaking before and i think it may be a faulty hose or something like that....i checked the fluid in the radiator and it seems to be fine so i am pretty sure it is not leaking from there, could my waterpump be going out?...does anyone have a picture or a diagram of a 200 Jeep Cherokee Laredo engine that i could use?...any help or advice is much appreciated...Thanks!!!

First determine where it's coming from. The leak may not be large enough to make it seem you are loosing coolant. My tranny likes to do that.

my overhead thermometer deal says "coolant low" and the coolant reservoir is pretty much empty...it definitly is leaking...could it be my waterpump going out?...my guess is that it has a faulty hose clamp or something....what is the easiest way to determine where it is coming from....i can;t see squat when i get uner the car because of the skid plate....maybe i should remove it and then look?....since it is cold out it probably isn't bad to drive it across town right?

I would fill the reservoir, before driving it. I would also remove the skid and see if it leaks at idle. Start there looking for fluid leaks. It may be a loose clamp or a bad hose, but you'll never know till we figure out where the fluid is coming from. If it's from the pump, replace it as it is supposed to leak when it's dying.

Take the oil cap off and make sure the head is not cracked between the two rocker arm tower's there below the oil cap. If it is you should see a little coolant or a crack or both. The 4.0's are bad about this.....

I would trace the leak first it might be a hose that needs to be replaced, with mine's I have to re-adjust the clamps once in a wile, just a thought

It could be your water pump. Mine went 2 weeks ago. It would only leak after I was running, even if it was only to move the cars around in the driveway. Check all your connections first though. If it is your water pump, you will want to get to it before it completely goes and you lose all your coolant. When it really goes, it will pour out very heavily.

I tied and tried last night to locate the leak...my overflow tank for the coolant was dry as a bone and so i filled it back up with coolant, after i did that, the "Low coolant" indicator on the overhead compas deal still said the warning, Does anyone know where the "Low Coolant" censor is?...when i got up this morning (its cold as he11 here) i drove it to work and the "Low Coolant" warning didn't show today....?????Hmmm???...it looked like there was coolant everywhere under the car, not just where it had dripped from...there was alot on the axil and crossbars and stuff...

The Low Coolant sensor is located inside the coolant over-flow reservoir.

Remove the skid-plate for a couple of days so you can observer the area of interest from underneath.

So is replacing/rebuilding your engine due to coolant loss and overheating...

My bet is on your waterpump. dont forget to replace your thermostat and hoses while you are at it...

Coolant Leak

It could be the lousy plastic tanks on your radiator. I had to repalce the radiator on my 93 ZJ three times. I now have a 97 and I am in the process of changing out that one.

If it is the plastic tanks causing the leak it will leak the most when the engine is going from cold morning start to warming up. Once the water is hot the leak will generally go away. I found an all metal radiator for my 97 so I wont have to go through this again.

so i removed the overflow tank and there is a hose coming out the back of it that is not connected to anything and i couldn't figure out where it connects to...it has connections for the censor and the one coming from the top of the radiator.....the hose does connect to something right?...its not just an outbound hose from the overflow tank right?

My 2000 GC has a hose an overflow hose coming out of the reservoir that doesn't connect to anything. It has a little plastic clip that hooks to the top of the passenger side shock bolt to keep it from flopping around.
