2 Q's, low odd idle, odd sound. HELP!!!

ok so this has got me stumped.my 4.0 runs great and shifts smooth threw all gears and in and outta my 242 t case smooth. no lights or codes on dash. the idle will be at the first line(250?) all day then the next be at the second line(750?) when at the 250 it shudders a little and when at the 750 its smooth for a few mins then shudders for a few seconds then back to smooth with no noticeable change in rpm. so the Q is wth would cause this? the second odd thing is at around 1300-1500 rpm I have a very noticeable sound, sounds like a exhaust shield, but I have a after market welded exhaust with no cats, cant pin point exactly where its at it seems to only do it while driving but at no specific gear. so what can it be? I cant find anything loose and it started randomly about a week ago while driving. thanks for any help!!!

Remove your throttle body and clean it. If you look there is a small opening before the butterfly valve that leads to the IAC (idle air controller). This little guy controls the air into the engine for the idle. Had the same issue on my old XJ. Once I remove the TB and cleaned it up good, btw take the sensors off before you do. Also make sure that your butterfly valve closes completely if not then that will affect the idle also.

First line is 500

When was your last tune up and filter change?

And put a cat back in, its illegal to remove and we don't condone that behavior here.

**tuned up about 2 months ago and I have a stock airbox with a k&n drop in filter that I keep clean. in my area there is no emissions and it passed state inspection as is. the no cat wasn't my doing it was like that when I bought it about a year ago I figured it would fail inspection but ran it threw anyway and it passed. also was pulled over for being too loud from a state trooper and he looked under it and inspected my exhaust and didn't say anything about the missing cat. so idk is it a state by state thing? ill try cleaning tb. thanks for the tip.

Replacing the cat is cheaper...

Get the throttle body cleaned up, verify plug gap, verify condition of cap and rotor, check fuel pressure. Have you changed the fuel filter?
