2" BB and 31's worth the cost off road?

Fairly basic question, as always money is tight but the ZJ is gonna get tires soon. I was all set on a 2" BB and 31's but re-gearing is not an option at this time.

- '98 4.0 ZJ, untouched factory LSD.
- Winter DD/Hunting/Occasional play rig (Mostly mud but also hills and gullies). Throw in an annual trip out west.

I'm starting to think that just stickin with 235/75's and throwing in a TrueTrac would be money better spent.

What say you?

LK

You are probably right. The 4.0 will be a dog with 31's also.

I keep hearing people talk about re-gearing. Is that advice for people with 3.55 gears in order to not drive like a pig with 31s?

My ZJ is a 4.0, and it came with 3.73 gears. Is that sufficient to run 31s properly? Or do I really NEED to go higher? Like 4.10?

Honestly, 3.73 or 3.55 with the 4.0 and 31s isn't really too too terrible. 4.10 is recommended for 31s, but it'll be live-able with 3.73. But put a regear on you to-do list.

budeget boost

Go for the budget boost on 31.
I had a 97 4.0 select track with 3.73 gears and a d44a that I swapped in with an aussie locker, budget boost and 31's. That jeep would scream, motor was stock and was way faster than any other 4.0 I've driven. It would cruise down the high way at 75-80 no problem.

31's and a 4.0 is not bad at all. IMO 3.55 gears are decent for 31's. there are vehicles that come with worse gearing from the factory.

i have no issues with my 4.0, 31's and 3.55 gears been running it for years. the extra ground clearance is worth it for sure.

Take this guys word, you wouldnt think the extra few inches would help a ton, but it comes in handy all the time.

I'm a V8 but 31's are plenty for a lot of trails. I surprise the hell out of the wranglers I run with because they're all on 35's and 37's.

I have 31s with a 2" BB with the 4.0 and I won't say it's terrible but it DEFINITELY a dog. I also needed new track bars and sway bars so Its not as cheap as you may think. On the other hand it is alot better on the trails.

Don't doubt this a bit. Every 4x4 I've had ran 31's or metric equivalent or bigger. One of the reasons I wanted 31's on the ZJ. But I already have one truck that won't consistently hold in OD going up the slightest grade or into a head wind when going down the interstate. Forget about it if you crank the knob for AC. Don't want the ZJ to do the same "if" the TrueTrac is gonna be an equivalent or better mod. Not worried so much about gearing and offroad. I can't recall running into anything that 4low wouldn't handle even if I was lacking some power. That's stuff just isn't around here.

I like the 4.0 as I've stated many times. For what I do I wouldn't trade it for a V8 but even I have to admit it's not a powerhouse.

2in bb and 31s will get you very far. i have a BB and 30s and i kept up with a 2012 wrangler rubicon, wasnt a hard trail but there was a spot he had to back up and try again.

Anyone that psots up saying that their BB'd ZJ kept up with, and did better than, a whatever on 35s/37s should be required to show pictures of said trail and said line that they did better than the other Jeep.

I still think a locked stock height ZJ on 30's with skids would out wheel a BB ZJ open with 31's with skids.
