When you pick up the belt from the store, get a Haynes or Chilton's manual.

Just need to loosen the belt atuo-tensioner and slip the belt off. The belt routing guide is right there under the hood.

Its spring loaded.

Its on the left if you are facing the engine about halfway down into the engine bay.

Thanks all done took about 15 minutes at best. I took the car for an oil change and they noticed that the belt was cracked and with 98K miles it was obvious. They wanted $140 for the belt and installation so I passed and went to the auto parts store and bought one for $25. Thanks again car should be fine for a while with the oil changed, the coolant just changed and a major tune up at 75K that included new trans fluid and the differentials. Car runs great and is in good shape should have many more years left in it. Still is as fast as my girlfriends 2005 v8 Explorer.

Thanks!

I gotta thank you guys. I've got a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo which started making incredibly loud noises a few days ago.

I messed around with my serpentine belt about 6 months ago and totally screwed things up to the tune of about $1100.00. So, I was a bit gun shy to mess around with the Auto Tensioner. I read your post, looked under the hood and saw shreds of metal on my engine block and then pinpointed the problem to be the Idler Pulley and reluctantly took it to a mechanic. He quoted me at $400.00.

(It turned out to be a busted Idler Pulley. See where the bearings fell out?)

So, I ran to Advance Auto and replaced the Idler Pulley for $27.00. Grabbed a 15mm socket, pulled the Auto Tensioner back, slipped off the Serpentine Belt, pulled out the old busted Idler Pulley, put in the new one and started her up! No noise, everything works great...for now.

Thanks Forum! You saved me a coupla' hundred bucks!
