1999 Grand Cherokee Limited - 4x4 Question

I bought it a few weeks ago. It did not come with an owners manual.

On the 4x4 shifter there are 3 settings

Top - 4 High
Middle - N
Bottom - 4 Low

That is what is listed on the plastic around the gear shifter.

Went to have it checked today as it wouldn't go into 4 high, but would go into 4 low just fine. We found out that:

Top - (Labeled 4 High) is actually 2 wheel drive
Middle (Labeled N) is actually 4 high
Bottom (Labeled 4 Low) is 4 low

The only thing that makes ANY sense is that the piece of plastic around the gear shift has the wrong labels on it... or it's the wrong piece of plastic or something like that.

I just came here to confirm.

To anyone else have a JGC Limited.... Is 4 High on the top (towards the front of the vehicle) or in the middle?

(Will get an owners manual at my next opportunity... I do too many miles to be driving around in 4x4 for no reason if something else is going on).

Thanks in advance and sorry for the book.

Sounds like someone swapped in a 242 t-case. Crawl under the jeep and check the id tag on the t-case for the model of the t-case. Then see http://www.wjjeeps.com/tcases.htm for more info on the 242. Or it could be possible someone swapped in a center console with the wrong t-case shift pattern on it. I would get a build sheet for the jeep and see what it came with stock.

My 4x4 shifter says the exact same things, but thats because its the Quadra-Trac (4wd all the time). How do you know its not going into 4wd when thats where the shifter is at. Im pretty sure you just have a quadra-trac GC.

We put it up on a lift today. Top was 2 wheel drive only. Middle was a form of 4 wheel drive.

I'm going to look at the model # tomorrow morning when it's light, but it really looks like I have a 242. I also think there are 5 positions for it, but since the plastic only has 3 listed, I never tried between the top and middle OR middle and bottom positions.

Check it out. You probably have a 242. which would be great.

How did you determine it was only 2wd when the shifter was in the 4 hi position?

When in 4hi, the full time 4wd should be completely transparant in operation. It is also set up to transfer power to the front or rear depending on traction.

If you shift through the whole range, there should be either 4 or 5 positions. 4 means it's a 231, 5 means 242. Shifter order is: 2HI - 4PT - 4FT (242 only) - N - 4LO

Looks like the transfer case has been swapped, without changing the shifter bezel. 4PT is 4 wheel drive, part time (locked center diff, cannot be used on any surface with good traction). 4FT is 4 wheel drive, full time (can be used on any surface). 4LO is like 4PT with gear reduction.

OK... problem solved... thanks to all of you.

The transfer case was switched out, it has a 242 in it. There are 5 positions, and they all work.

I didn't mention this before, as to not confuse the issue, but, there was also a problem with the cable until yesterday. The bracket holding it in the middle was bent, and it wasn't doing what it should. I had spent most of the last snowstorm switching between the 3 settings (not realizing there were really 5), and 2 out of 3 were 2 wheel drive. When stuck in the deep snow, the front tires would not even try to spin to get out. I had to switch to 4 low at the time to get out of those spots and it did it flawlessly. But like I said... that is fixed and it appears that all 5 work properly.

Snow scheduled for tonight... time to go have some fun with it.

And a Thank You to everyone that helped!!

Killer deal finding a WJ with a 242 already swapped in.

It is on the top next to the 4 high. try to test by driving over a 6 inch curb slowly. You will know soon enough if it is working!
